Concrete Truck Driver | Independent Concrete Ltd. (ICL)

I always get to the plant 30-45 minutes before I start (so around 6:30am), this allows me to check and prep my truck for the first delivery. While I am waiting for my turn to load, I can be helping with concrete blocks or cleaning my truck. Once I get my dispatch ticket, I know where I am going, and I can slump the load. Once the load is delivered, I come back to the yard and either put any left-over concrete into blocks or get reloaded if the truck is empty. If I am on stand-by I will help other drivers with blocks, clean my truck or do paperwork.

Concrete Truck Driver.

Trucking industry for 7 years – in concrete for almost all that time.

The challenge and variety on the job. It’s fun and never gets boring!

I had an ex who was a heavy-haul trucker. I used to ride along, and he would let me do some of the driving – I loved it!
After I had kids, I started driving their school bus. When I was able to go back to work, I took an industrial readiness course which provided me all the industry tickets – class 1 license, dangerous Transportation of Dangerous Goods, H2S and the like. A friend got me driving a gravel truck in town and then I moved over to his concrete business.

I love to drive and enjoy the challenge! ICL allows me the flexibility to work around my kids’ schedule and my other job as a fitness instructor.

Patience. I also try to make it easier for the next guy – I always try to leave the truck clean as I found it, or cleaner and help where I can.

My husband. He’s been with Independent Concrete for 30 years – he is a tremendous voice for the industry and for ICL. He is motivated to provide the best product possible.

I’m a real early bird – up at 4am! I can get a lot of things done early so that I can enjoy the rest of my day.

  1. Energetic.
  2. Friendly.
  3. Honest – with everything!

By then my husband will be retired and running a charter fishing boat – he will need a first mate! Maybe I’ll still be at ICL working part-time and for sure, I’ll continue with fitness.

Being a ready-mix driver is a great job as long as you don’t mind getting dirty. I’ve learned lots of new skills and I work with great people.

President | KDR Engineering Consultants Ltd.

My days are slower now, and with COVID I’ve been able to do a lot more self-study and webinars. I do a lot of ACI training so I need to organize materials and travel, etc. I still do pre-pour meetings and troubleshooting when asked.

I am a concrete consultant. I work with ready-mix producers, contractors, insurance companies and homeowners troubleshooting concrete problems.
On behalf the American Concrete Institute BC Chapter (ACI BC), I conduct training courses for the certification of concrete field-testing technicians throughout BC.

Over 50 years! My first job in the concrete industry was in 1970 in Winnipeg as a concrete testing technician on concrete street paving projects.

I love how concrete has changed and evolved over my 50 years. I find it funny when people not involved with concrete think concrete is a boring subject, that there is nothing new. I am constantly having to learn new things about concrete construction because it is constantly evolving – cements change, new admixtures are being introduced, building codes and standards require new procedures. I have no time to get bored! And when concrete is done right it is a beautiful and very artistic material.

I was working on municipal design for a consulting firm in Winnipeg. Then in 1976 I decided to take a position with the Canadian Portland Cement Association in Edmonton to look after paving and ready-mix markets – and I never looked back!

The material is so interesting – it’s a mystery. Technology is always changing so I’m constantly learning. I think concrete runs in my veins!

  • Public speaking – I don’t get nervous.
  • My students say that I’m a good teacher.
  • Concrete knowledge – allows me to troubleshoot.

To participate wholly in the industry. Be active – belong to trade associations and societies. Don’t just show up – get involved.

I had wonderful mentors when I entered the engineering profession but my mother really was my inspiration. She only had a grade 8 education when she had to leave her schooling behind and go to work to help support the family. She was always very proud of me and fully supported me going into a male-dominated career. Like me, she enjoyed talking with people!

I’m in the office at 7:30am – I just can’t imagine staying in bed! I need to get to it and see what’s new.

  1. Inquisitive.
  2. Friendly.
  3. Messy-organized (if you understand that one you are my people!).

I will have fully retired by then; I need to be on a beach with a Mai-Tai!

Sheena Sidhu

Controller | Yard At A Time (YAAT), Fraserway Prekast & Vancouver Ready-Mix

I arrive at the office between 7-7:30am. I alternate between plants depending on the need. Since we recently acquired Vancouver RM, I have been spending a lot of time there guiding staff. I deal with accounting deadlines wherever I am located: banking, reconciliations, financials, invoicing, government reporting and payroll. I also sit on committees for HAVAN (Homebuilders) and Concrete BC’s convention.

Controller

The concrete industry is full of people with great work ethics, self-confidence and an ability to have fun. Being an active member of Concrete BC has allowed me to meet some inspiring, powerful professionals and make lifelong friends. The industry has helped me reshape my thoughts about full-cycle accounting and helped me grow, both personally and professionally.

My husband. When Racy was transferred to Edmonton by Lafarge, I needed to leave my job at BC Hydro. A few years later, Lafarge transferred him to India and we moved there with our three children. When we returned, shortly after, Racy bought YAAT. After raising our children, our pride and joy, it just made sense for me to restart my career in our business.

I love what I do! The timing was great to use my education and training for our business.

Love of numbers, hard worker, organized, driven Education and past experience. People-oriented.

Nothing is impossible.

I have two.
My husband Racy. He has an admirable work ethic and is a hard worker. He is caring and intelligent with a great sense of humour. My Mom. She raised me and my sister as a single mom – my Dad passed when I was two. She always instilled good values and led by her hard-working example.

I want to get things done. I am a very organized person so my to-do list is waiting for me.

  1. Hard-working.
  2. Organized.
  3. Ambitious.

I’ll still be working. I’m sure we will be growing the business so there will be new challenges along the way. Hopefully, we can add some beach time (with a drink in hand!) too.

Determine your mix (what you want in life), batch it (plan), turn the drum (execute), pump it up (improve), finish and place at the top! That’s concrete!

CEO / Co-Owner | Island Ready Mix

No such thing as a typical day! No two days are alike with a dynamic product like concrete. I’m usually up early to workout and get some coffee in me, then I go to the office to see what’s waiting. I’ll typically measure new jobs and respond to requests then I’ll head to the plant – often with snacks for the gang. Next, I’ll get out to the sites and visit with crews and customers. When I get back, I’ll deal with invoicing, billing and pricing jobs. Some days are full of mix designs and concrete testing and others are full of safety reporting and inventory. By the time the evening hits I jump into family duties, or volunteer on some local boards. I also always find a way to make time for some fun!

CEO / Co-Owner

All the wonderful people! There are so many different skillsets, trades and organizations involved in our industry. There is always someone willing to lend a hand or share a great story.

I have a business/management background and when the opportunity to buy Island Ready Mix came up, I thought… let’s try
this out! I love a professional challenge.

Definitely the team we have at Island Ready Mix. It is a cliché, but we really are like family. Anyone of us can have a good or bad day and we are all in it together. We are very supportive of each other. I feel a push to keep that culture growing.

  • Relationship-building with our team and our customers.
  • Employee appreciation/recognition.
  • Service-focused business model.

There is magic on the other side of fear.

Richard Branson
I love the focus he puts on empowering his employees and creating a unique experience for his customers. I also admire his fearlessness and out of the box thinking on how to use his brand. I find him to be an inspirational entrepreneur.

100% my family – I love working hard and chasing dreams but at the end of the day I look forward to going home and being with them.

  1. Ambitious
  2. Charismatic
  3. Empathetic

I like to believe I will still be at Island Ready Mix. I want to deepen my industry knowledge and grow our business. I think we can broaden our revenue streams with expansion and other related products/services and I look forward to seeing where we go!

As a new face on the concrete scene, I have really appreciated all the mentorship and support I have received. Concrete BC has been particularly helpful – I have been on a lot of training courses, which I have found valuable!
I would love to encourage women not to feel like the concrete/construction industry “isn’t for them”. I really believe that people from different/diverse backgrounds will bring forward new ideas to keep the industry moving forward.

Leslie Hassell

Partner / Co-Owner | Princeton Redi-Mix

I’m a 9 to 5’er. Like everyone in the concrete industry every day is different and it ends up being a mix of everything. Usually, I start with emails and phone calls then do the banking. If it’s a busy day at the plant then I can be batching or dispatching. I usually fit in sales and administrative tasks, too.

Partner / Co-Owner

I love being part of building a community and all the great people we have met along the way.

Jamie and I saw an ad in the paper for a little ready-mix company in Princeton. We already had a cabin in Tulameen and thought wouldn’t it be nice to move there. We knew absolutely nothing about the industry and being uninformed youth, we thought that wouldn’t be a problem!

I like the challenge of the business – even in Princeton the business is different every day. The people who work here and our community keep us here.

Being able to deal with all different types of people whether they’re inside our company or customers. I can calmly and succinctly deal with any issues. Also, flexibility, I am a multi-tasking expert!

My grandmother.
She was a tough, resilient lady who carried on through tough times and never let go of her morals or values.

For me it’s compelling – I need to know what’s happening! In the yard, on a site, a particular customer… I know there is something I need to do!

  1. Outgoing.
  2. Hard-working.
  3. Reliable.

If all goes well… on a sunny beach somewhere!!!

This industry is full of hard-working, honest and reliable people. Careers are challenging and fulfilling. Anyone who cares to can have a long, prosperous career in concrete.

Courtney Billon

Field Operations Supervisor | Lafarge Canada

Every day has new challenges and introduces me to new people. Being in a company as large as Lafarge, dealing with health and safety takes me to different job sites every day – there are always new interactions.

Field Operations Supervisor

Building connections with people. Communications in the concrete industry allow me to foster relationships with a vast array of people, including internal networks and external companies. These interactions encourage me to increase my industry and corporate knowledge and to grow personally.

When I completed my associates degree in communications I wanted to work with sports teams (my dad owned lacrosse teams).
I was in PR with the Vancouver Giants – this is where I met Paulo Gastaldo (Gastaldo Concrete) who is a season ticket holder. I started to work for him at Gastaldo Concrete which turned out to be an awesome experience. I left only because it’s a small, family business and I outgrew my role. I’m still in touch with everyone at Gastaldo.

100% the people! An added bonus, is the industry wages.

Friendly – I try to get along with everyone and across generations. I see the value in and respect all different backgrounds in the industry.

Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Paolo Gastaldo.
He was my first boss in the industry. His passion for the industry is contagious but it’s not just about work, he is very family-orientated. I’ve tried to carry his example with me throughout my career at Lafarge.

My dogs! Working at Lafarge allows me to meet new people everyday – I’m never at the same job site and I learn new things all the time. It’s exciting.

  1. Super-competitive – I love challenges and I don’t want it to be easy!
  2. Driven – I’m passionate about everything I do.
  3. Outgoing – I love meeting new people.

I want Tim Higginson’s job! He has taught me tons. If that doesn’t work out… a golf pro!

I didn’t set out to have a career in concrete when I applied for my first dispatch job. I was the first female dispatcher to work for the company and was dispatching an all-male workforce. I remember the self-doubt I felt that first day I started the new job. Once I settled my nerves, I quickly realized I was surrounded by encouraging and supportive leaders who were eager to share their experiences. My career has grown and my roles in the industry have changed but the one constant I have had throughout the journey is a sense of camaraderie and belonging.

Pamela Bragg

Founder | Sarkany Management Inc.

I deal with concrete and construction materials suppliers all day. My role is to provide insight into HR practices and policies so that companies stay on the right side of employment and labour legislation. They can focus on their work if I can help them with their HR.

Sarkany is an HR consulting firm primarily focused on clients within the Canadian construction and concrete sectors.

The people. From frontline placers, drivers, batchers, QC to mid-level superintendents and senior management. This industry attracts and keeps hard-working, down-to-earth practical people. Much like the product, the people in concrete are resilient, durable and strong.

I was head-hunted into a training role. When they offered me the position, I was skeptical about accepting. I liked the job description and I like the company but was unsure about the industry- it was a significant departure from where I was. I asked to spend a couple
of days at sites with some of their people – what an awesome experience! I spent one day with a paving crew and another a ready-mix driver. I fell in love with the idea of moving to the concrete industry. I signed the job offer that day and have been involved with concrete ever since.

Full stop – the people! Once they are in the industry they stay in the industry, some move around but no matter where they land, the relationships are long-term.

  • Objectivity
  • Knowledge
  • Professionalism & Compassion (we are dealing with people)

You get what you give. My everyday baseline for ethical, hard work.

The women in my family.
I come from a long line of bad-assed women. Women who stood up for what they wanted and what they believed in. Women who did not see gender when it came to their place in the workplace. These women were “leaning in” before it had a name.

I am a problem-solver by nature. If my phone rings it is typically because there is a problem that needs solving – it’s my job to find the right solution.

  1. Tenacious.
  2. Even-tempered.
  3. Passionate.

I live in the moment, I don’t plan that far ahead! I love what I’m doing so I will continue to grow my network, add value for my clients and give back through mentoring.

You can’t put old heads on young shoulders. As my tenure in the industry grows, I feel it’s important to mentor and support women in industry. There are plenty of roles for women in concrete, find what you love and do it!

Tori Burwell

General Manager | Pemberton Concrete

Some physical activity to start the day off on a positive note followed by a visit at the concrete plant to check in with the crews and ensure the operations are coming together. Calling on customers and ensuring our concrete is being delivered on time and in spec is another task that I take pride in. Afternoons are usually spent back at the office taking care of the back end of the business and making sure all the plans are in place for the next days concrete deliveries.

General Manager

13 years in Construction, 5 of those years in Concrete.

Getting to see and be a part of all of the amazing projects people build with concrete – from people’s personal home builds to big industrial projects. It’s everywhere!

I knew when I left high school that I wanted to work outside and in science and math – this drove me to go to university to study civil engineering. I have always loved to work on a team and have a variety of challenges, so I chose construction. Then after having worked for large contractors and the federal government, I chose to switch over to working for a smaller company and in the specific discipline of concrete.

Concrete is always changing – there is so much you can do with it. Projects are diverse, whether they are big or small there is always something to learn so it’s easy to stay engaged. Building relationships with the team and with our customers makes me want to stay.

  • Problem-solving.
  • Team-building.
  • Flexibility.
  • Respect.

Be respectful and positive towards others, all problems are solvable.

Phil Seabrook & Ben Allard.
Both dedicated professionals who have built successful businesses in the concrete industry and who continue to lead by example.

My dog! But seriously, I want to do a good job and part of that is being prepared. My motivation is customer satisfaction.

  1. Organized.
  2. Personable.
  3. Positive.

Our business is only 6 months old so in 5 years I want the business to be well established with a strong reputation in the community. I want to continue to build a great team and grow the business.

Carloyn Campbell

Former Executive Director | Concrete BC

No such thing as a typical day! I have four primary areas of focus: advocacy; training and education; marketing and communication; safety. Depending on the time of year and members’ priorities, these areas shift.

Executive Director

The people! I know everybody says that but it’s true. The BC concrete community has become my second family.

I left the software industry to work for the Cement Association of Canada, in Ottawa, as their national marketing director for paving. When I decided to move to the coast, BCRMCA was looking for an executive director and it was a good fit.

Engagement with the people is the biggest driver. I have amazing colleagues across the province and Canada. Everyone in this industry is so supportive of the work I do – there is always something new to learn that is challenging and rewarding.

  • Communication – a broad background in tech and business.
  • Enthusiasm – my job is 1 part quarterback and 1 part cheerleader.
  • Story Telling – I need to provide a compelling narrative for the industry and the association.
  • Confidence – people trust me to keep their information confidential.

Live! There is no dress rehearsal.

Brene Brown.
Her ability to have conversations about hard topics is phenomenal. She injects humour while sharing her wisdom about the business of being human in a corporate world.

COFFEE! Honestly, the joy of a new day. I love being in nature and start each morning walking my dog – it charges me up for the whole day. I’m always excited about what the day will bring and with whom I’ll be connecting.

  1. Grateful.
  2. Passionate.
  3. Optimistic.

Exploring the world with my best friend and husband, Duncan.

Being a woman in construction can be daunting, but the changes in attitudes and roles for women I’ve seen over the last two decades give me hope that we’re moving in the right direction. The concrete industry specifically offers great and diverse jobs for women, as is evident from the phenomenal women we’ve profiled this week. You can earn a family-supporting salary and there are opportunities for advancement into leadership roles. And we support each other. I encourage women to consider a career in concrete – you won’t regret it!
